We take it for granted when we don't get shafted by companies, even if it's within their total power to do it. So here's a shout out to those companies that never did shaft us.

Github

I thought for sure Github would end up shafting us. It's such a good service at such a good price. Free for open source. Gets better ever year. Can't fault them.

Microsoft

I love c#. A lot of people are suspicious of it because of Microsoft. But the way they've opened it up and supported every platform with .net core is just crazy.

They put so much work into it, performance improvements every few months and the entire thing is licensed under MIT. Think about that. Microsoft spends millions of dollars on this and it's all open source MIT licensed.

Valve

Valve saved pc gaming with Steam. Can you think of any other company that wouldn't get tempted by the hoards of investment guys telling them how rich they'd be if they sell or go public?

Everything Valve does is for us, not them. They aren't motivated completely by self-enrichment. They know that by being awesome that all comes naturally, as a side effect.

You get rust 2 preorder up and i'll pay you now just so you can have rust 1 deprecated by 2024-01-01. <3

I have been using unity as a hobbyist since 2008, paid their pro licensing and always supported them. But after CEO had his sexual harassment thing, and now this, sorry i'm done with unity.

You know, GitHub and Microsoft are both one-and-the-same now? And... given Microsoft's history, I'm still waiting (And, admittedly, as a C# dev, have been for the past 15 years or so) for the other shoe to fall on MS... seems they truly have turned over a new leaf.

It's a risk that always taken when using software as a service. It's a really unique risk, and can really suck.

And Lets not forget Unity...oh, god damnit Unity... you had one job... Definitely agree with those companies btw especially Valve/Steam! Totally dont agree how major developers are pretty much ghosting them too in order to release their own versions in order to make more money.

The irony I feel as a rust player who sees that the shafting unity has done to facepunch is the exact same as the shafting facepunch has done to rust players like myself is what makes this situation so hilarious to me. Greedy company finally gets a taste of their own medicine and I love it

I'm glad to see the blog still active. It's nostalgic to me and I like to see what you're up to from time to time. It's crazy to think I was 12 in 2006 when I started reading your blog and you were living in an attic, I believe. At least with a parent haha, kid memories are unreliable. I had gold member so I could try the new gmod 9 beta with lua scripting, it was such a game changer! Then you made the deal with valve for Garry's Mod, and completely rebuilt it from the ground up. Thanks for all of the memories!

P.s. I bought Half-Life 2 in 2005 just to play Garry's mod because I heard about it at school. So thanks for introduction to all of those games too, because they're great.

Keep it up, to the whole team at Facepunch
